Marrakech lies between the High Atlas and the Atlantic, so its day trips cover very different climates: a desert plateau that bakes in summer, mountain villages where winter brings snow, and a windy coast that stays cool. No month suits every trip, but every month suits some.

Pick by season

Summer

Head for the coast or the water. Essaouira is cooler and windy; the Ourika Valley is where people from the city go to escape the heat.

Winter

Ouzoud carries more water and has fewer visitors. Agafay evenings get cold, so the camel-and-dinner trip with its early return is the gentler choice.

Summer heat on the plateau

From June to September Marrakech and the Agafay plateau get very hot. The Agafay trips deal with it by starting in the afternoon and riding at sunset; the trip by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours moves its start between two and four in the afternoon with the season so that the camel ride falls at sunset. Ait Benhaddou is hot too; reviewers describe it that way in September. Essaouira, on the Atlantic, is the usual summer escape, and Imlil, at about 1,740 m, stays well below the heat of the city. One reviewer of the Imlil hike found that the summer landscape did not match the photos.

Snow and closed roads in winter

Snow falls in the High Atlas between December and February. The road to Ait Benhaddou crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, and Marrakech desert activities postpones or refunds its trip when snow is heavy or the road is closed. Around Imlil a reviewer of the three-valley trip found the waterfall road closed in January. Evenings at the desert camps are cold; bring a warm layer for the ride back.

Water at the falls

Ouzoud carries more water in winter and is quieter, but too cold for a swim; the marrakech city travel trip only runs in good weather. At Ourika the flow changes with the season and recent rain, as one operator notes in its listing. Flooding can close a site as well: one reviewer found the Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate flooded and visited a film museum instead.

High season

March to May and October to early December are the busiest months, along with Christmas, New Year and Easter. The Ourika path is busiest at weekends and in high season, and the large Agafay camps fill up. Book a few days ahead in these weeks, and pick a weekday for Ourika.

Ramadan 2027 and the clock change

Ramadan 2027 is expected from February to early March; the exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon. The trips keep running. Some restaurants and shops change their hours during the day, which matters on trips where you buy lunch yourself. Morocco usually turns its clocks back by an hour for the month and forward again afterwards, so confirm the pickup time if you booked before the change. Eid al-Adha in 2027 is expected in May; around the holiday some shops may close.

How the season shaped the day

Reviewers remember a sunset that made the evening, a walk in the mountains away from the city’s heat and a long road back that cost a sunset on the coast. Two notes help with planning: the summer landscape looks different from the photos, and Ramadan slows the pace on a summit hike.

“What a wonderful experience. Pick up on time where previously agreed. Brilliant value for money. Highlight has to be camel ride. Stunning sunset. Lots of loos . Food not really to our taste but presented well and was hot. Our guide Ayoub was fantastic as was the driver. …”
Robert · United Kingdom · September 2026 Agafay camel ride & dinner · Mouslih tour
“A little disappointed; the photos don't correspond at all to the landscape in summer. We didn't feel like we had gone to the same place, and we didn't feel like we had seen much.”
Verified traveller · France · August 2026 · translated review Imlil hike with lunch · Tours From Marrakech
“It’s a wonderful trip. The views are spectacular and you can see Toubkal, the tallest mountain in North Africa over 4000 meters. Avoid going during Ramadan as the guides are barely moving forward then and will slow you down a lot on a flat path. Also don’t expect to summit Talamrout. When we were …”
Kinga · Poland · April 2026 Talamrout summit hike · Toubkal Hiking
“a nice trip and escape from Marakesh's heat... the walk was just right to get hungry for lunch. the food was excellent, at the producers of argan oil and at the local family from Imlil. The guide Hasan and the driver Rachid are excellent.”
Vjekoslav · Croatia · September 2026 Imlil walk & family lunch · Trekking Morocco
“Dounia has been great, very nice and professional guide. Also the driver, and Youssef from the surf school has been part of an amazing day in Essaouira. Too bad for not seeing the sunset, but the road to Marrakech is long and I understand why we came back …”

FAQ

What is the best month for day trips from Marrakech?

April, May, October and November suit the widest range of trips, from Atlas walks to Ait Benhaddou. In summer pick Essaouira, Ourika or Imlil; in winter Ouzoud, Essaouira and Agafay with a warm layer.

Do day trips run in winter?

Yes. Snow can close the Tizi n’Tichka pass on the way to Ait Benhaddou and some roads around Imlil, and one operator postpones or refunds in that case.

Do day trips run during Ramadan 2027?

Yes. Ramadan 2027 is expected from February to early March, depending on the sighting of the moon. Restaurant hours change, and the clock change can shift your pickup time.

Is the Agafay Desert too hot in summer?

The trips start in the afternoon and spend the evening at the camp, which avoids the hottest hours. Daytime heat on the plateau is still strong, so bring water and sun protection.
