Lunch at a family home
The Atlas trips are where lunch is most often in the price. Tours From Marrakech, Trekking Morocco, Toubkal Hiking and the five-valley trips include it; on most of them it is a home-cooked meal in a Berber house, often in Ait Souka above Imlil, and Trekking Morocco serves vegetarian and vegan food. Marrakech Day Trips - Tours and the three-valley trip on Viator charge for lunch on top. Tips are listed as not included on several trips, so keep small notes for the guide and the driver. The same check for every destination is on what the price covers.
Three valleys, five valleys
The valley names describe a drive, not a hike. Attractive Tours spends about an hour and a half at Oukaimeden for lunch and keeps the walking to an optional stroll at about 1,900 m. Morocco Inspiring Tours adds a guided walk of sixty to ninety minutes in the Sidi Fares valley and offers child seats. On Saturdays the weekly souk in the Asni valley can be part of the loop. The three-valley trip by Art de Cuivre is mostly Imlil: tea on a terrace, a Berber house in Ait Souka, Moulay Brahim near Asni, and a walk to a waterfall where you choose between walking, the van and a mule. It needs at least two people per booking.
The Atlas and the Agafay Desert in one day
The combination trip by Tours From Marrakech starts with tea at Moulay Brahim, walks in the Imlil valley, has lunch in Ait Souka and ends with a camel ride of about half an hour at an Agafay camp. The listing gives no length for the walk; reviewers say it took more than two hours and was steep in places. The Imlil hike by the same operator also stops for an optional camel ride in the Agafay Desert on the way out. For the full desert evening, see the Agafay Desert page.
After the 2023 earthquake
The earthquake of 8 September 2023 hit the villages around Imlil, Asni and Moulay Brahim hard. The trips run again, and a travel report from spring 2026 still describes building work in the valleys. The lunches at family homes and the guides from the villages keep part of the money from these trips in the mountains.
Toubkal needs two days
Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa, rises above Imlil, and the walks by Trekking Morocco and Marrakech Day Trips - Tours promise views of it. Climbing it takes at least two days with a night in a refuge, so it is not a day trip from Marrakech. The Talamrout hike is the closest you get in a day: the summit at about 2,700 m has views of Toubkal. Hiking boots and poles can be rented in Imlil.
Snow, sun and layers
Spring and autumn are the best walking seasons. In winter snow can block the higher roads; one reviewer of the three-valley trip found the waterfall road closed in January. In summer the valleys stay well below the heat of Marrakech, but one reviewer found that the summer landscape did not match the photos. Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring a warm layer and sun protection in any season. Cooking with a family in an Atlas village is also possible as a class; Marrakech Food Tour compares the cooking classes, among them one in the mountains.
